John Cassidy, Neurology

Board Certified in Neurology

Medical School: St. Louis University School of Medicine

Residency: Children's Hospital of San Francisco (now C.P.M.C.)

Dr. John Cassidy is Board Certified in Pediatrics and in Neurology/Child Neurology. He sees mainly adult outpatients but is available for Child Neurology and inpatient consults.

He graduated from St. Louis University Medical School and did his first residency year there; his second and third were done at Children's Hospital of San Francisco (now CPMC, California Campus). He practiced Pediatrics in the U.S. Army in Germany for three years and in Wisconsin for two years. He then did a second residency in Neurology and Child Neurology at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance. His interest in medicine was sparked in childhood by the sudden death of his grandfather; his pediatrics experiences helped focus his interest in Neurology and Child Neurology. He practiced Neurology with the Permanente Medical Group, based in Santa Rosa since 1987, for over 29 years before retiring in November 2011.

His approach to medicine is to treat patients as well as he would want his family to be treated, but also to involve patients and caregivers deeply in both understanding their diagnoses and in making decisions.

He was Chief (from 1990) and Co-Chief (from 1995 to 2007) of the Department of Neurology at Kaiser Santa Rosa. He is co-author of several articles dealing with Reye Syndrome, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, and Spinal Fluid Leakage. He has also given multiple Grand Rounds over the years and a number of talks to patient caregiver groups (mainly focused on Dementia).

Dr. Cassidy was widowed in 2002 and happily remarried in 2011. He lives in Santa Rosa with his wife and one aging feral cat. They share five grandsons in Petaluma, Santa Rosa, and San Diego. He especially enjoys singing, having begun voice lessons at age 60. He finds it gratifying to discover and enhance this "new" ability. He also enjoys cooking and is rekindling an old love of gardening.
